FUJIYAMA HD-OR EYEPIECES

Design Illustration

All focal lengths are currently in stock and ready for immediate shipment

Kokusai Kohki continues the tradition of offering the highest quality Japanese made Orthoscopic eyepieces with the introduction of our brand new FUJIYAMA HD-OR eyepiece lineup. Fujiyama HD-ORs are hand crafted at our Tokyo factory, and individually inspected by us before we ship.

Named after the Japanese name for that sky reaching symbol of Japan, Mt. Fuji, the FUJIYAMA HD-ORs come standard with multicoatings on all four air to glass surfaces, giving them extended light throughput, and brighter images overall, as compared to our previous OR eyepiece lineup. And all lenses are edge blackened to reduce internal light scatter and reflections to an absolute minimum. (And, for the record, cemented lens surfaces are UNcoated).

The entire Fujiyama lineup is parfocal, accepts standard 1.25" filters, and comes with plastic eyepiece caps. The chrome barrels of the Fujiyama HD-ORs are straight up and down, and we have removed the helpful, but also often annoying, safety groove.

Solid construction, bright, clean and sharp views throughout a fully corrected 42 degree FOV, with sharp field stops, makes the Fujiyamas perfect for every type of viewing, and are also an exellent match with high end apochromats for hard core planetary, lunar, solar and double star viewing.

Each eyepiece carries a one year Kokusai Kohki parts and labor warranty. Our promise and warranty to you is simple: you will either LOVE your FUJIYAMA HD-OR eyepiece or you get your money back!

Barry Gooley taking part in a star party on the summit of Fujiyama (Mt Fuji) way back in the end of the 20th century. Our 12" dobsonian was joinied by a 6" Fujinon binocular, a 4" Miyauchi binocular along with a number of Vixen and Takahashi telescopes. All the equipment was carried to the top and back via heavy bulldozer, with us riding on top, on a winding and hair raising mountain trail. Large numbers of very surprised climbers joined our group for 2 whole nights of fabulous viewing under transparent (though not entirely LP free) skies. Cold, windy, raw, rugged, mysterious and oxygen deprived, the summit star party was for me an amazing, rare and a thoroughly grueling, sunburned experience, never to be forgotten. Special thanks to our sponsors and all those who attended (and helped us carry and set up all this stuff!)

Masuyama eyepieces are back! Masuyama 45mm, 50mm, 60mm and the massive 3 inch barrel size 52 degree FOV Masuyama 80mm

The 3 inch barrel Masuyama 80mm eyepiece

Japanese language web page is here

A brand new design that offers long focal length telescope users low magnification, a wide field of view and an immense actual FOV

Both sides of the Masuyama 80mm eyepiece

In collaboration with Mr Masuyama of Masuyama eyepiece fame, Kokusai Kohki has gone out on a limb in introducing a truly new eyepiece, the 3 inch barrel size Masuyama 80mm. This eyepiece is aimed specifically at the many private and public owners and users of long focal length telescopes, who would like to greatly reduce the intrinsic high magnification of their telescopes while also significantly widening the FOV they are able to attain at this low magnification, gaining striking celestial views reminiscent of those seen through similar aperture dobsonian telescopes.

Although an 80mm focal length eyepiece is hardly unheard of, an 80mm eyepiece of 2 inch aperture imparts a narrow FOV that hardly gets the blood pumping, and the oohs and ahhs coming. In contrast, the 3 inch aperture Masuyama 80 goes far beyond the current 2" (50.8mm) paradigm by boldly going where few eyepieces have gone before, into the parallel universe of 3" barrel width (76mm) eyepiece design. A peculiar new universe that now allows low magnifications AND wide fields of view.

A view of the top of the Masuyama 80mm

The Masuyama 80 is not a mere extension of the previous Masuyama design but a brand new design that allows it to perform with excellent image sharpness from center to edge, and little to no light loss at the field edges. Viewing through a C11 at 35X, with over 1.5 degree AFOV, this eyepiece sends long f/l telescopes into the realm of RFTs and short f/l Newtonians. With a field stop diameter of 70mm, at a 52 degree apparent FOV, the huge image combined with the amazingly lowered magnification creates a feeling of a much larger area of space being viewed that what the modest number 52 would suggest. After all, how many full moons would fit in a 1.5 degree actual field of view?

MASUYAMA 80 eyepiece design

Each hand made Masuyama 80 is carefully and lovingly designed and manufactured at our factory in Tokyo. Each eyepiece is fully tested before shipment and is annointed with it`s own serial number. Production runs are limited and only 20 eyepieces are currently available for sale. Each air to glass surface is fully multi-coated. A rubber eye guard insures optimal eye positioning. And a large "tire" placed around the bottom half of the eyepiece, covered in a non-slip rubber rollet, provides a secure hand hold for the hefty 1.7 Kg (3.74 lb) weight of this massive eyepiece.

MASUYAMA 80 dimensions

Is the Masuyama 80 a good fit for shorter focal length telescopes? Well, I would have to say that the Masuyama 80 is not for everyone, but as long as your telescope is equipped with a 3" focuser sleeve, the Masuyama 80 will provide exellent, distortion free views as well. For example, when attached to our APM 130/F6 CNC-LW telescope, the Masuyama 80 provided surprisingly clear and fresh images at the mere 9X magnification that this combination produces. No edge distortion or vignetting was seen, and images from field center to edge remained sharp and contrasty. So yes, the Masuyama will also work well with shorter focal lengths.

Now, while this was a valuable experiment, short focal length telescope owners have many other options available to get low power and wide fields without the expense (or the massive size) of the admittedly high price of the Masuyama 80. I feel that the true value of the Masuyama 80 remains with long focal length telescope users who want to gain a wide field, low power window to the universe similar to those provided by our beloved dobsonians.

3 inch star diagonal mirror system, with 3" Schmidt Cassegrain adapter sleeve and 3" to 2" eyepiece adapter

To help make the transistion to a 3" focuser easier, we have also developed a low cost 3 inch star diagonal mirror system that includes the 3" adapter sleeve for easy attachment to your (larger) SCT tube`s (larger) visual back. Just screw the 3 inch sleeve on to your telescope, slide in the star diagonal, then the Masuyama 80mm. and tighten all the lock screws, and you will have instant access to a whole new universe with your long focal length telescope.

As a convenience, we also include a 3 inch to 2 inch eyepiece adapter with this set. To avoid marring or scratching, the sleeves use a wrap around band to lock your eyepiece or accessory into position.

Masuyama 80mm and 3 inch star diagonal mirror system on a Celestron C-11 XLT telescope

The Masuyama 80mm and the 3 inch star diagonal system are currently in stock and available for immediate sale. The Masuyama 80mm is priced at 198,000 yen. Each eyepiece also includes its own aluminum trunk case. The 3 inch star diagonal system is priced at 48,000 yen.

The Masuyama 80 is designed and manufactured entirely in Japan. The 3 inch star diagonal mirror system is made to our specifications at our supplier in China. Quantities are limited; please contact me for availability at time of your order.

NIKON HYPER WIDE

NAV HW Eyepieces

Riding the wave of their international success with the NAV-SW series eyepieces, Nikon now offers the new hyper wide 102 degee FOV NAV-HW series eyepieces. This series consists of two focal lengths, the 12.5mm NAV-12.5HW and the 17mm NAV-17HW. Each eyepiece also includes, at no charge!, the unique benefit of an "EiC" tele-extender lens, specifically designed for each eyepiece, that shortens the focal length to 10mm in the case of the NAV-12.5HW, and the NAV-17HW to 14mm. Which means you are actually getting two eyepieces for the price of one.

The NAV-12.5HW is a 1.25" eyepiece that includes a 2" screw on barrrel. The NAV-17HW is a dedicated 2" eyepiece. All surfaces are multi-coated with world class Nikon coatings and the mechanical and cosmetic finish is, well, perfect, as you would expect with any Nikon product.

Either eyepiece is delivered in a big package, making airmail shipping rates are a bit on the high side. But I am sure you will find your Nikon HW to be a superb addition to your eyepiece case and your pride and joy as you train it on the night skies. Available from Nikon in 2~3 days from your order

NIKON NAV SW Eyepieces

Nikon commemorated the International Year of Astronomy 2009 with the birth of their NAV-SW series eyepieces. Manufactured in five different focal lengths, all are now currently available and shippng from order.

Nikon NAV SWs, based on their excellent eyepieces for Nikon spotting scopes, have evolved to meet the requirements of high level astronomical observation, with the deepest attention devoted to exquisite rendition of astronomical point sources of light, while also taking a chapter for the digiscope design world, which demands flat fields and sharp images right to the very edge of the field of view. The NAV SW design emphasizes suppresion of field curvature and all astigmatism to bring about the maximum improvement in edge of field fidelity wthout sacrificing the quality of the image at the central of field.

The compact Nikon NAV SWs are 72 degree FOV eyepieces that come with 1.25" barrels that are threaded for standard filters. The comfortable eye relief specs for each eyepiece are designed to also harmonize with the optical performance of that eyepiece. Also, removal of exit pupil aberrations virtually eliminates any instance of kidney bean blackout effect, regardless of where the eye is placed during observation. The excellent color balance of the NAV SWs was derived through rigorous testing of this optical parameter on terrestrial objects, insuring the highest degree of planetary and lunar color rendition. Multicoatings on every optical surface make sure that these images are also as bright and otherwise distortion free as possible.

The Nikon NAV SW exterior design is somewhat reminiscent of the tried and true Nikkor lens design, with an attractive, high quality appearance, and rollets located around the entire circumference making the eyepieces easy and sure to grip even in darkness, or with gloved hands. A flexible silicone rubber eye shield on the top of the eyepiece helps block streets lights and other annoying sources of light pollution, especially a help when viewing sensitive planetary and lunar surface details at high magnifications. The rubber eyeguard is painted with a unique phosphorescent logo that glows ever so slightly to help make seeing the eyepieces (or finding them) in the dark just a little easier.

Nikon NAV SWs moisture resistant design will provide long years of constant and worry free service and viewing pleasure to discriminating astronomers in any observing environment worldwide.

The combination of the ideal optical qualities of a flat and wide 72 degree FOV that is sharp from edge to edge, excellent color rendition, comfortable eye relief intelligently designed to harmonzie specifically with each eyepiece, a beautiful and compact body design, highest quality Japanese glass, multi-coatings and exterior materials, and a good selection of focal lengths, makes the Nikon NAV SWs a true and new winner in the ever expanding world of 21 century astronomy.

 Pentax Eyepieces

News! PENTAX XW inventories are on the wane!

Pentax says that remaining inventories of the XW eyepiece series are low and could run out at any time. Inventories could quickly deplete with no prior notice. Pentax says a new production run would be made when the above run out but there is no certainlty of this at all. If you are considering a Pentax XW eyepiece purchase, my advice is that sooner is better in regard to placing your order!

70 degree apparent field of view, Eye relief 20mm
Practically waterproof, to assure you of years of problem-free observing
Beautiful to look AT, as well as look through

Kokusai Kohki offers the fabulous Pentax XW series wide angle SMC (super multi-coated) eyepiece lineup.Though not rock bottom low price, this premium eyepiece provides tack sharp and bright images to the edge of the very wide field. Adding in superior light throughput and plenty of eye relief, the XW series deserves a place in every serious observer`s eyepiece case. The Pentax XW series also offers the discriminating observer the following benefits:

* All focal lengths standardized with a dazzling 70 degree field of view, and generous 20mm of eye relief, for ease of viewing even when wearing glasses.

* Eyepiece design incorporates high refractive index Lanthanum glass elements. This sophisticated design corrects and balances all optical abberrations for images that approach optical perfection. An added plus is the extra effort made to compensate for spherical aberations found in the human eye, virtually removing kidney bean and blackout effects. A truly easy to view through eyepiece.

* Proprietary Pentax multi-coatings on every air to glass surface, with special coatings also applied to all cemented surfaces, assuring you of superior light transmission (550nm transmits at approximately 96%, and overall transmission of all visible wavelengths measured at over 90%)

* Computer designed field stops placed at critical locations provide the highest degree of high contrast views

* Choose from 3.5mm, 5mm, 7mm, 10mm, 14mm and 20mm focal lengths for exactly the right eyepiece for low power viewing of Milky way star fields all the way to medium and high power planetary and lunar observing.

* The XW series conforms to a JIS 4 "daily use" waterproofing rating, assuring you that your eyepiece will give you maximum value over the years by remaining unaffected by the usual dewing and wetness that occur during your observation sessions (Note: this level does NOT assure waterproofing if the eyepiece is totally immersed in water).

* The XW series 3.5mm to 20mm eyepieces use a 1.25" size barrel.

* Height adjustable rotating eye caps let you easily place your eye at the exact location for comfortable viewing and perfect eye relief. Removing the eye cap exposes a 43mm / P0.75mm pitch male thread, for accessory attachment.

* All Pentax XW eyepieces are threaded for standard 1.25" , or 2" size filters, depending on their barrel sizes.

Kokusai Kohki Original

8x 50mm Correct View Finder

EF-508

Our 8th production run of the EF-508 correct view finder comes with a white tube, and is available as an OTA only, as a two piece set with a "forward sweeping" finder bracket of own design and manufacture, and as a three piece set that also includes our original"Finder Clamp" saddle plate, which will mate your finder to most any OD tube with an OD of about a 144mm to 250 mm. For tube ODs larger and smaller than these, the use of a small spacer or shim between the Standard Bracket and tube should easily allow for a decent fit.

The EF-508 uses a very well made pechan prism internally, to right the upside down image coming from the objective lens. This prism gives surprisingly clear and bright views and in no way feels inferior to the image seen thru a typical upside down finder of the same aperature. An X type reticle, marked in 1 degree increments, uses a center bubble for putting your object of interest in the center of the FOV, without covering it up. A brightness adjustable red LED that illuminates the reticle is standard with your EF-508.

EF-508 finder and its newly redesigned finder bracket, in combination with the our original "finder clamp" saddle plate. The EF-508 finder is also available as an optical tube by itself, or as an optical tube with only the finder bracket. A variable brightness red LED illuminator is standard equipment in any configuration.

Though optically of significantly high quality, the correct view EF-508`s greatest claim to fame, is, well, its correct view image. Objects appear in correct up/down/left/right orientation, as if viewing them either with the naked eye, a binocular or a spotting scope. This makes correlating stellar patterns in the FOV with your star chart a snap. And reading far away billboards, street signs, etc is a breeze (no more having to stand on your head ;- )

Each EF-508 is personally inspected before shipment and is accurately focused. Of course everyone has their own focus preferences, and you can easily adjust the infinity focus, and reticle focus with some quick turns of the adjustment rings.

To help deliver the brightest possible images, all optical surfaces are fully multi-coated.

The red LED unit is delivered with two LR-41 button batteries that are easily sourced whereever batteries are sold.

The EF-508 is a robust optic, and is slightly heavier than a standard finderscope of the same aperture. We have seen very few problems over the years with the sale of over 4000 units worldwide to date (though almost all in Japan).

The EF-508 two piece set, the optical tube with our original finder bracket, also mates with a Vixen finder saddle plate, available separately at 1,210 yen. As the Vixen finder saddle is an industry standard that is used on many modern telescopes, the EF-508 finder bracket allows users of telescopes with this saddle arrangement an easy fit, with no modifications.

Our finder bracket uses oversize plastic tipped 5mm aluminum adjustment bolts to secure the finder telesope without scratching it. And custom made thin washers lock the collimation screws once put into postion.

The EF-508 correct view finder is made in China for us to our specifications, and each unit is inspected for quality here in Japan before we ship. We market and warrant our finders on the condition that you either LOVE your EF-508 or you get your money back.

Accessories For Vixen PORTA / PORTA II

Slewing Handle : "New Guide Handle"

Carry Bag : "PORTA Bag"

The Vixen PORTA, and newest model PORTA II alt-azimuth mounts, have taken Japan by storm and I hear that they are hot sellers all over the world. And no wonder; the PORTA mount carries a decent payload up to about 5~6, maybe 7Kg, OTAs attach easily to it with the now nearly universal Vixen dovetail plate, it has competent dual axis slow motion handles, and comes complete with a very decent height adjustable aluminum tripod, all for a quite reasonable price. And it`s rather pretty too. But we did notice one aspect of the PORTA mount that, in use, sometimes proves to be amazingly annoying .....

Aiming your PORTA mounted OTA around the sky usually means grabbing the focuser or star diagonal and then using this "handle" to point your scope. This often results in twisting the star diagonal out of alignment, getting gear grease on fingers or even having the star diagonal+eyepiece combination fall off onto the hard ground below....Yikes! At any rate, the usual method is, oh, so, well,... inelegant....And perhaps not very accurate either. And certainly not convenient....

Instead of grabbing and then man-handling the focuser, the simple addition of a robust handle to the altitude axis of the PORTA removes all this lack of finesse with a quick and easy installation. Our own "New Guide Handle", designed specifically for use on both PORTA mounts, has a foam covered grip on the end that keeps fingers warm, and lets you become the true master of your trusty PORTA mount ;-)

"New Guide Handle", for both PORTA and PORTA II mounts, attaches in about 5 easy minutes, and the necessary tools are included with your PORTA mount as it comes from Vixen. Attachment involves removing the dovetail saddle plate on the altitude axis, slipping it over the New Guide Handle, then rebolting the combination back on to the altitude axis, a very simple procedure that is also kinda fun to perform. Highly recommended for all PORTA users!!

1) Gather your implements from under the rubber cover of your PORTA`s azimuth axis 2) Use this hex wrench to loosen the screws attaching the saddle plate to the altitude axis.
3) Get your New Guide Handle in hand, along with the included attachment screws. 4) Line up the holes in the saddle plate with the New Guide Handle and insert the screws
5) With the same hex wrench, screw the saddle plate, with the New Guide Handle sandwiched between it and the mount, back onto the altitude axis 6) Installation completed in 5 minutes or less! Make pointing of your PORTA easy, intuitive, accurate and for the first time, elegant!

The PORTA Bag (sorry, out of stock)

For both PORTA and PORTA II mounts, we also offer a PORTA specific carry bag that perfectly conforms to the hump of the alt-azimuth head assembly, and includes an inner pocket for holding the plastic parts tray from between the tripod legs. Rugged materials and strong zippers will keep your PORTA safe for a lifetime and it sure makes transporting and storing your PORTA mount a cinch. One of our most popular items in the Japanese market, this carry bag can also contain other makers` tripods or even complete telescope OTAs like a TAK FC125 (without removing the finder).

POLAR V easy right angle viewer for Takahashi EM200, NJP and EM400 Polar Scopes

POLAR V2
easy right angle viewer for Vixen GP to SX generation Polar Scopes. Also fits Celestron CG-5 Polar Scope

Now no more neck strain, laying on the ground or crossed eyeballs when polar aligning your Takahashi EM200, NJP or EM 400 mount. And also available is the Polar V2 for Vixen polar scopes compatible version, spanning the GP/GPD/GPs/DPDs and SX series mounts. And Polar V2 is also compatible with the Celestron CG-5 polar scope.

Created at the request of one of our older customers, the new POLAR V (V = vertical) incorporates a specially designed adapter that slides over the TAK polar scope housing, placing either a Nikon DR-5 right angle camera angle finder, or our own orignal "ERA" right angle finder, at the exit pupil of the TAK polar scope. And with the proliferation of Vixen and Celestron VW and CGEM mounts, we now provide the Polar V2 to mate wth these mounts.

The view of the polar scope pattern through either angle finder is clear, bright and easy to see. Viewing and making alignment adjustments while looking down into the right angle finder, insteads of upward at an awkward angle, with the attendant neck strain, holding one`s breath etc., not only is an easier alignment obtained but that alignment is effected faster and with more precision.

Here is the view of the polar scope pattern as seen through the Nikon DR-5 viewer (DR-5 is TAK only compatible)

The new Polar V is super simple to use, just slide it over the polar scope housing, and tighten the three non scratching, plastic tipped lock screws to secure the adapter into position. The Polar V adapter also includes a knurled metal ring that locks on to the eyepiece of the polar scope itself, with a slot on the adapter`s side to allow easy access when rotating the polar scope pattern to match it to the current date and time.

The right angle finder is placed at exactly the right loction to perfectly view the polar scope pattern, and the included diopter adjustment makes focusing on the polar scope pattern a simple matter for accomodating a wide range of eyesight, either with or without glasses. The 1x magnification right angle finder also comes with a flip switch for even greater alignment precision, at an instant parfocal 2X zoom (with the Nikon DR-5), or 2.5X (with the ERA right angle finder). The DR-5 right angle viewer offers a slightly wider FOV over the ERA, and slightly larger actual FOV at 2X over the ERA`s 2.5X. And of course, you get the fabulous Nikon mechanics and finish with the higher cost of the DR-5 unit.

POLAR V DR-5 and POLAR V ERA for TAK EM200/NJP and EM400 polar scopes

POLAR V2 ERA for Vixen GP/GPD/GP2/GPD2/SX polar scopes, and Celestron CG-5 polar scopes

For the Takahashi EM200, NJP and EM400, we offer Polar V with the elegant and extremely well made Nikon DR-5, and also with a slightly lower cost ERA (Economy Right Angle) finder made by another popular, but unnamed, Japanese maker. Both units are comparable in operation, with the ERA version having a slightly narrower overall view of the polar scope pattern as compared to the DR-5, though still plenty wide enough for a very easy polar alignment. The ERA as a 2.5X top end magnification over the DR-5`s 2X.

For Vixen and Celestron polar scopes, we offer the Polar V2 with the ERA right angle viewer only. Polar V and Polar V2 are also easily and quickly removed after use, robust, and precisely manufactured to give a lifetime of service.

All units are currently in stock and ready for immediate delivery. If you are getting tired of straining your neck and your eyes trying to get that perfect alignment, look no further for an elegant way to no strain, no pain, and more accurate, polar alignment. The Kokusai Kohki original "L-PLATE"

A rugged and heavy duty L-Plate telescope holder, for your alt-azimuth mount. Complete set priced at 8,800 yen.

The proliferation of low cost lightweight altazimuth mounts like the Vixen Porta, makes astronomy a breeze. Their fast setup and easy disassembly means that one can take advantage of a quick break in the clouds to do a quickie observation, or give the neighborhood kids an impromptu look at the night sky when the mood strikes. The saddle plate on the side of the Porta`s (etc) altitude axis mates easily with so many currently available telescopes that use the Vixen compat dovetail plate, so attachment is quick and tool-less.

But what happens when the OTA you want to mount does not have the requisite Vixen compat dovetail plate? Or, in the case of SCTs, when rotating the scope 90 degrees so the OTA`s dovetail slides into the Porta mount`s saddle, the telescope`s finder then rotates into an inconvenient location? Or if you need an L angled plate that is stronger than current offerings?

This is where our new L-Plate comes into its own.

Our L-Plate was made for the purpose of allowing easy attachment of a wider rangle of telescopes on to a Porta (etc) mount. By wider range, we were thinking larger apertures, heaveir weights and also equipment that did not have a dovetail plate built in. Making such flexibility possible meant that the plate needed to be more robust than the offerings we were currently seeing on the market. And the plate had to allow easy attachment of the various configurations of many different telescopes, spotting scopes, even binoculars, without have to own a machine shop to do so.

Our L-Plate uses an attachment plate hewn from a solid sheet of aluminum, with angled edges that give the plate added rigidity even under rather heavy payloads. We combined our plate with an over-long Vixen compatible vertical dovetail plate shaped attachment arm that allows larger aperture scopes to fit on a Porta mount. This extra length is also a big help with balancing such telescopes. The attachment plate is drilled with a series of 7 pairs of M8 (8mm) threaded holes, on 35mm centers (the Takahashi standard). The provided 1/4" lock bolt lets you attach the various telescopes, binocular holder brackets, spotting scopes etc.that have a 1/4" threaded attachment hole. And then position them in your desired location, through the two long 1/4 inch width slots.

Total weight is right at 700 grams, and overall dimensions are: 200mm x 117mm x 15mm thickness on the attachment plate, with a height of 200mm on the attachment arm. The entire aluminum L-Plate is black anodized to look good over the long term.

Also, our L-Plate does not have to confine itself to smaller telescopes riding only on the lightweight altazimuth mounts. We have successfully placed, and use, a heavyweight APM 100 10cm binocular mounted on the L-Plate, and riding with ease on our rugged T-REX altazimuth mount. The L-Plate is inexpensive yet surprisingly versatile, quite strong and made to precise specs. Built for long term user friendly stability, please use your imagination in coming up with more new uses for this handy telescope attachment plate :-)
